I Believe-Barry Currington & The 250 Voice Met Choir

The Golden Age Of Gospel Choirs The 1960’s. Philadelphia is known as the city of “Brotherly Love,” it is also a city deeply rooted in religion, with churches ranging from small storefronts to majestic Cathedrals. One of the great churches in the sixties was the “Met Church” located at Broad and Poplar streets in North Philly. The church was founded by Rev. Thea R. Jones (1920 – 1992) who came to Philadelphia in 1954, and held his first meeting inside a huge tent at Second Street and Erie Avenue – which blew down during a severe storm. The following year, Rev. Thea Jones moved to something far more substantial: the Met – the old Metropolitan Opera House – at Broad and Poplar Streets. Built by Oscar Hammerstein Sr. as the second and final of what was to be a chain of opera houses. He purchased the landmark for $250,000, an astounding figure in 1955. Built in 1908, the Met provided seating for 5,000 and its natural acoustics so good that the Philadelphia Orchestra recorded there for many years. Renamed the “Met Church,” it was the perfect forum for the soft-spoken Rev. Jones, who liked to say that his sermon delivery fell somewhere “between Oral Roberts and Bishop Sheen.” He was not a fire-and-brimstone preacher, he said, but carried a soft message of “love and sweet compassion.” With a rapidly growing congregation over the years, the “Met Church” became one of the largest interdenominational churches in North Philly. As the church grew, so did the choir, from 71 to over 250 strong, under the leadership of Barry Currington. The majesty and sincerity of the choir made them one of the top church choirs in Philadelphia. The Met also served as a show place for some of the greatest gospel programs in town. The gospel roster was always a who’s who, with some of the major gospel artist and local gospel talent appearing in service and concert. One major gospel event was the yearly Easter Sunday program/service, usually hosted by Louise Williams of WDAS.

Manrico Barry Currington was born in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. He began playing the piano at the age of three. His formal musical training started to materialize at the age of six, when he started directing the adult choir of the church he attended. Later he became the assistant director of the Choir Union of Ft. Lauderdale. He also studied instrumentation under Julian “Cannonball” Adderly. Upon graduation from high school he furthered his education by attending Michigan State University. Upon settling in Philadelphia, he was hired to serve as Minister of Music at the “Met Church,” and organist. Barry is also an arranger and composer. He served as pianist for both Clara Ward and Willia Ward.

“I Believe” from an album by Barry Currington & The 250 Voice Met Choir, titled I Believe.

Singing Susan Ashton’s song “Let Me Go” back in 2009 at Northland Church in Orlando, FL. I’m very grateful for Shane Smith, Rob Alexander, and Pete Geiger because they are awesome musicians!
